Jean Paul Gaultier

The word on the fashion street is that butterflies inspired Jean Paul Gaultier’s Couture collection. That goes without saying considering he sent Dita Von Teese down the catwalk dressed as a butterfly! The thing that I wondered was why?

The audience where invited to a theatrical show that was not just about the butterfly. The designer opened the collection with a black two-piece suit, before parading the models down the catwalk in these light-hearted designs. Without wings or other butterfly features the designer simply led the audience to believe the models were butterflies by the shapes of the designs. Large shoulders combined with nipped-in waists and free-flowing skirts created the ‘butterfly’ vision. The patterns and detailing used resembled that on a butterfly’s wings.

It wasn’t at all camp. It was just a great show with magnificent designs.

Maison Martin Margiela

As soon as one thinks of Couture fashion week they automatically think of the fabulous gowns and glittering designs in which designers send models down the catwalk in. Maison Martin Margiela, in this instance, was different. There was none of the intricate detailing as seen in Chanel or Elie Saab. It seemed more of a clown act at a circus then glamorous fashion.

From flower two-piece trouser suits and sequin flared trousers paired with striped metallic overcoats, this collection has sent the fashion world crazy! Nobody expected to see such unique and out-there designs during Paris Fashion Week. It is meant to be a time of glamour, glitz and ladylike designs.

Maybe it was time for a change. Martin Margiela could have the right idea in that to change the expected into the unexpected. Everybody knows that when you watch the red carpet of the Golden Globes or the Academy Awards, it’s all glamour, glitz and long gowns. Yes, of course, there would be uproar if some major actress (let’s say Amy Adams) turned up in one of these far more out-there and edgy designs, but maybe it’s what the fashion world needs. An element of surprise.

Elie Saab Spring/Summer 2014 Couture

We all recognise an Elie Saab design as soon as our eyes glance at it, and this collection has not changed my views on this fabulous designer at all! Looking at the gowns from the show remind me of something from a Disney movie, think Sleeping Beauty when she is rescued by the Prince from her tower. The ‘ball gown’ has always been an element of Saab’s designs with their entricite detailing. image

Having once stuck to quite neutral colours we can now see that Saab has begun to experiment with bold colours such as blue in her designs. The lighting casted blue shadows over the runway which added to the dramatic effect of the blue gowns he sent his models down the catwalk in.

The flower detailing seems to stick and be a feature of Elie Saab’s designs that do not seem to be changing. They are the element that makes his dresses stand out from the crowd and they are recognised merely for this.

When Marilyn Monroe  said ‘Diamonds are a girls best friend’, Chanel certainly proved it. The Haute Couture show for S/S’14 really showed the fashion world all that glittered. With feathered headpieces, glitter eye makeup, glitter & rhinestone encrusted everything, this collection is definitely not for the faint hearted. One little outfit that caught my eye was the rainbow inspired 2 piece suit with matching elbow & knee pads and of course, the bum bag! Karl Lagerfeld has said it so now everyone lets do it! Its the return of the so-called ‘fanny back’.

So true..

So true..

According to WGSN - White is the colour of the week!
